Honoring Heroism: TransCor Officers Awarded the Medal of Valor

It was with tremendous pride that CoreCivic and TransCor leaders attended the North American Association of Wardens and Superintendents (NAAWS) Annual Conference in Daytona Beach, Florida, where TransCor Officers Carlos Ramirez, Flavio Garza, and David Sanchez received the Medal of Valor for their extraordinary and selfless bravery.

This prestigious recognition reflects the courage they showed in the line of duty when they—and the vehicle they were operating—came under fire from a lone sniper while protecting those entrusted to their care. In a moment of imminent danger, they demonstrated remarkable composure, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to service. Their actions represent the very best of who we are as an organization.

We are deeply grateful to NAAWS Executive Director Jeff Crawford and the entire NAAWS organization for honoring our officers with this distinguished award. Their acknowledgment reinforces the standards of courage, integrity, and service that guide our work every day.

What made this moment even more meaningful was the presence of the officers’ families and loved ones. Their unconditional support is what allows our teams to face the difficult and often unpredictable challenges of working beyond the secure walls of the institutions we serve. Words like “extraordinary” fall short when describing these officers and the impact they have on TransCor and on our industry as a whole.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to CoreCivic Executive Vice President and Chief Corrections and Reentry Officer Daren Swenson, Vice President Stacey Stone, Managing Director Rusty Washburn, and Senior Manager Deb Schuman for attending the ceremony and for their continued, steadfast support of our mission. Without the long‑standing support and partnership of CoreCivic, there would be no TransCor America and no opportunity to carry out the vital work we do each day.
